Pie Town and Catron County
Here's a little history-In , the early 20th Century, Pie Town was a thriving agriculture community! Cattle and Pinto Beans were king! The Pie Town area actually supplied ALL the Pinto Beans for the entire US Military! (domestic and overseas troops)
The Cattle driveway as it was called, was active from inside the Arizona border all the way to Magdalena! The driveway was a natural, long valley that cattle were herded through to railway shipping yards in Magdalena. The small communities on this route were staged approximately 20 miles apart which was about the distance cattle could travel in a day's time before they needed water.
Catron County
- Catron County is unique, to say the least! It is the largest county in New Mexico with the third smallest population. It is almost 7,000 square miles with a population of 3,579 folks and 12,000 ELK.
